In this time of instant gratification, it appears to me that many have lost the ability to look to the future much beyond a few months. It’s the only explanation I can offer for the recent election results. No thought for the long-term effects of electing those that would dismantle the republic.
We have all heard about Empires collapsing after about 250 years. It has to be pointed out however that the United States isn’t an empire in the sense of the Roman or Ottoman empires. We are a constitutional republic. Destroy that and we may become a more traditional “empire.”
Economic collapse, military overextension, and internal decay are outlined as the cause of an empires collaspe. We are certainly experiencing all of those issues right now! The policies proposed by this incoming group of legislators will most certainly contribute to an economic crisis! A twenty dollar an hour min wage? Medicare for all? Loan forgiveness? Extended time off for maternity leave, even for men claiming to be women?
As for military overextension I do believe we are spending an inordinate amount of money on other nations military operations. We are standing alone in NATO when it comes to footing the bills. We provide 62% of Natos’ total defense spending. 62% out of 32 countries! That is our military overextension. We can’t finance every war that occurs even when the participants are our friends. I like my neighbors, but I can’t pay their mortgage!
As for internal decay, that is a topic I have been talking about for years now. That decay stems from societal expectations. It is those expectations that create a national morality. When a society embraces aberrant behaviors, declaring them as a constitutional right, the decay begins. Society has lost that moral compass. Best explained by this simple phrase, ” just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”
The DSA. Have you heard that acronym being bantered about lately? It stands for the Democratic Socialists of America. It’s a way to say socialism without having to say I support socialism directly. The effort is to make socialism sound like a good thing. Socialism is never a good thing! History has shown us that as surely as the collapsing of empires.
The ability to amend the constitution is the foundation of the republic. It is what separates us from an empire. The process is a difficult one, as it should be when talking about a foundational document. There have been over 12,000 proposed amendments. Twenty-seven have passed. The last one was in 1992 and concerned congressional pay! Think about that.
Now there is talk of abolishing the electoral college. That would most certainly weaken the foundation! We hear about gerrymandering, from both sides of that aisle. What is that all about? It’s about getting the votes needed to pass your proposals. The electoral college and congressional districts are impediments at times, if only we could eliminate them!
What is the proverbial carrot being dangled in front of the voters? What is the promise? The government will take care of you! That’s pretty much the idea. The government will guarantee your success, regardless of the amount of effort you put forth and indeed, even if you do nothing at all! You’re just being marginalized, discriminated against and it’s systemic! We have to change the system! Yup, goodbye constitutional republic, goodbye independence, you can’t build anything alone! We are the DSA and we’re here to help.

Heading for a cliff! Trust me, it’ll be great. Hindsight is always 20/20 why aren’t we looking to the past? You do realize that is where you find the future don’t you? History does repeat itself. That happens when people fail to look back.
