Seeing an article about the singer Jelly Roll making some political commentary, and the possible consequences of that, I couldn’t help but add my own comment; “Know your role, Jelly Roll.”

There is speculation that Jelly Roll just Dixie Chicked himself. Funny how we all know what that means. Well, at least us older folks know that. The thing is, it is a real thing. There are those that will “boycott” Jelly Roll for his views. I’m not very familiar with whatever songs he sings, I’m not a fan.

Personally, I wouldn’t stop listening or buying anyone’s music, art, or anything else based on their political views. I might tell you how stupid they are, how much I disagree with their politics, but I would still be a fan. I’m not giving up things I enjoy to make them stop doing whatever it is I enjoy.

When public opinion is a major part of your livelihood, it is prudent to keep your opinions to yourself. Call it anything you like it is just common sense. I say, know your role. Now I can say and write just about anything I want because, well, I have nothing to lose.

My friends already know my opinion, and I don’t care what strangers think unless those strangers start giving me money. My role in life is just being me, unremarkable, just another one of the extras. I’m fine with that.

I do wonder if these celebrities get feeling like their opinion is somehow superior to others. Do they begin to feel like experts or something? If they are musicians they should stick to talking about music, if they are actors, talk about that.

Guessing they never learned about what I call “polite company.” Polite company are those folks that aren’t close to you, that are just friends and acquaintances. In polite company one does not discuss personal or private matters. It’s also called civil discourse.

I’ve heard that this Jelly Roll character was an overweight drug addict. He survived addiction. He was a victim and through tremendous effort and against all odds managed to become a star. He’s a hero! Well, that’s what some say.

I come from a time when you didn’t advertise your bad choices, your mistakes, and missteps to the world. In fact, the hope was that no one would ever know. All of that certainly wasn’t anything to brag about. And above all, you didn’t lecture anyone else about any of that!

I’m just saying, good for Jelly Roll. I do think it would be prudent for him to just know his role. His job is to entertain. That’s what he does. My advice to him is; Stick to that unless you figure you have enough money that you don’t need that job anymore. It’s just common sense.
