I don’t mind when people take a picture of me. I just wonder why the picture doesn’t look like me. Do you know what I mean by that? What I look like on the inside is surely different than the outside. The minds’ eye is the preferred lens.
When the only eye you see with is your minds’ eye, you can become narcissistic. It’s an inflated ego and sense of self. It can be accompanied by a lack of empathy as well, then you are said to have NPD. A disorder that requires therapy and treatment.
My issue is I see perfectly well with all my eyes. In fact, I see right through some folks! That doesn’t disturb me at all, but when I see through myself, it is unsettling. It’s a matter of virtue. Virtue is having a high moral standard, basically complete honesty.
Pictures and mirrors reflect the truth. There was a time when that was absolute, today it can be questioned. Pictures can be created using AI and an entire suite of photo editing programs, it is getting harder to detect when that has been employed.
Not counting “fun mirrors” mirrors have remained unchanged; for now, anyway. Sounds like an invention waiting to happen. What do you want to see in the mirror? We can make the outside look like the inside. Forever young? Or would that be something else?
I was thinking about all of that after seeing a picture of myself, followed closely by a picture of some of my high school classmates. None of us looked the way I thought we did! Several classmates I haven’t seen since 1971, and they sure looked different.
I’m fully aware that we all aged. I just didn’t think we had all gotten old. I look old and yeah, they did too! Sorry guys but my virtue won’t allow me to less than truthful. In my minds’ eye we are all still in high school, as I don’t have any memories to associate with them other than those. And to be completely honest, one I don’t remember at all! I am blind there!
In our eyes’ mind. Isn’t that same as having a positive outlook? Seems like it should be to me. But then a picture is taken, the truth is exposed and you are forced to look at yourself. I don’t mind the picture being taken, I just don’t like looking at them.
I changed my profile picture yesterday, possibly related to all this thinking about pictures. I received a few comments and compliments. That’s always a nice thing and I appreciate the kindness.
One individual thanked me for putting a face to a name. I understood that immediately. I wonder, did I look anything like what was imagined? We do form pictures in our minds’ eye. Those profile pictures are always a bit suspect to me. I admit to choosing the ones I find the most flattering to myself!
