Like everyone else I find myself wondering at times, do I have a purpose? I mean, should I have a purpose, am I that important to the universe? Have to say, I don’t think that I am. It’s rather a disappointment to discover that, but it could be worse. I could wake up one day to discover I’m gay, or a Democrat!
If we have a purpose it would have to have been assigned by some form of intelligence. Generally, man has called that intelligence, God. And there is some reward offered for fulfilling your purpose. Eternal life tops the list of possible rewards.
If you receive eternal life, what would be your purpose then? Is that what angels are all about? Is their purpose to help you, guide you in fulfilling your purpose? I’m not Catholic, but I think that is what they believe to be the case. Saints, angels or whatever you wish to call them, Catholics pray to them.
Is obtaining eternal life the whole purpose in living in the first place? Just what is the grand design? These are the big questions man has struggled with since the very beginning. Is mankind the only creatures that think about that? Is that what “intelligence” really is?
The dictionary says that intelligence is the “ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” Maybe intelligence isn’t in gaining knowledge but rather, not knowing the answers. Is intelligence simply asking the questions? I mean, do animals, birds, plants or anything else ask these questions? Do they wonder about their purpose?
In mathematics we say we postulate a theorem. That means we assume a starting point we later hope to prove true. The idea that there is a God, an intelligence that designed and controls this universe, is postulating a theorem. The proof lies in death. But we don’t want to accept that as the answer.
Now intelligence is also the application of knowledge. That would indicate there is a purpose. Do I need to know the purpose? No, I probably don’t need to know that. All I really need to do is accept the theorem. If that is correct, I will have fulfilled my purpose.
For me, personally, my biggest question is, will I know it? I mean will I know that I died? And if I do, will I then know the answer? Thing there is, I’m not sure of the question. Will that theorem be proven? Well, that is what faith is all about.
