What constitutes the majority? Is it 51% or 75% ? That all depends. A simple majority, that 51% is all that is required in a democracy. That is what those on the left would like you to believe we have in America. At least that is what they call it all the time, our democracy. Thing is, our “democracy” is a Republic.

In our republic a “supermajority” is required to pass certain legislative actions. That “supermajority” varies from two thirds (66.7%), three fifths ( 60%), to three fourths (75%). The reason for that being to establish and enforce the balance of power in government. The constitution spells out what situations require what.

The thinking is that not every decision, every piece of legislation is as important as another. For instance, amending the constitution requires a two-thirds supermajority, a bill to create a holiday requires a simple majority. Interestingly many of the two-thirds requirement concern elected officials and presidential decision making.

To further complicate matters each state has its’ own constitution and its’ own rules concerning majorities. Of course, federal law overrides state laws if those laws are in conflict with the constitution.

That is where many issues reside, in between those lines. It was impossible to list every situation that required the various levels of voting. One state may require a simple majority while another requires a supermajority for the same piece of legislation. That is especially true when it comes to taxes.

All of this was designed to protect the minority. A noble sentiment and a just one. But the underlying problem with that is, just because everyone is doing it, does that make it right? The answer is no, but we do have to decide don’t we. So, 2/3 is the best we can do. That still indicates 1/3 of the people may disagree.

The next logical question to be answered is this; what constitutes a minority? Is that number 49%, or something smaller. We are certainly passing legislation, using a simple majority, to protect and empower a very small percentage of the population.

Consider the whole LGBTQ+ thing. Estimates are that about 9% of the population identify themselves in that way. That group has an entire month dedicated to them, and a great deal of legislation passed to support them.

Consider the black population in America, about 13% of the population. That minority had three amendments added to the constitution! The majority had decided that it was time to delineate that in writing, in the constitution. A war was fought over that. Not everyone agreed to those amendments however, in fact, a large number dissented. That’s a piece of history

So, is a minority 9%, 13% or 49%? You really can’t set a number. It all depends upon what that minority is proposing, asking for, or demanding. We have to weigh that. What’s the issue with the LGBTQ+ community? It’s a moral issue isn’t it.

Same thing with the blacks in America. It was a morality issue. There are still people today that practice a different morality than what was declared. “All men are created equal.” No mention of women though, and an amendment was added to cover that as well. The 19th amendment.

How do we determine the majority? It is determined by money and power. Yes, enough money will give you a lot of power to influence. Works with everyone.

If I were to become a billionaire these writings of mine would be very popular. There would be companies clamoring to publish them. I have no doubt about that, this minority of one would get the attention of many people. All would be in support as long as I agreed to support them.

I’m one in a population of about 349 million. I’m a minority. All that is needed is a simple majority to support me. Isn’t that exactly what every minority wants? The minority wants to be the majority. It just depends though, just how important am I?

Thing is; it does take all the pieces to make the whole. Should we settle for; most of it? That’s the moral question here.
