I had computer issues and retained the services of a professional. It was an online thing and overall I was satisfied with the results. It appears that the issue I was having was resolved. I did learn a few things. It came as no surprise that I was told to resolve some of the issues I would just need to purchase a new computer. The one I am using is now six years old, a relic from the past. And that’s the world we live in now, when it comes to technology. I did read somewhere where some restrictions on cell phone manufacturers regarding that was being implemented. They can no longer be designed to fail after a year or so. Sounds like a good idea to me.
I admit when it comes to computers I really have a very basic understanding of how they operate. The truth is, I know the terminology a lot better than the actual object. For instance, I know “drivers” are integral to the operation, I need to keep my drivers updated, but what they actually are, well I don’t know. I was told by my technician that the driver for my sd card was incompatible with windows 11. You can’t fix that. Well, because the computer had been updated from windows 10, the driver failed. Asleep at the wheel? Everything else seems to be working fine, so I’ll just keep on using this computer.
I am amused in a way. I do know a lot of the terms used and I even sound like I know what I’m talking about on occasion. I’m smiling because that also seems to be the case with a lot of folks these days. Lots of folks knowing the terminology but not really knowing the subject matter. The internet is populated with experts; especially Facebook. Everything from animal husbandry to astrophysics is covered daily. Constitutional scholars and ethics professors abound. I can’t speak for the others like Tik-Tok or instagram but I suspect that is the case on those sites as well.
My grandson has a friend that is an IT man. That stands for Information Technology, learned that the other day, although I’ve been saying it for a while. Acronyms are quite abundant these days. It’s funny how we know what they mean without knowing what they mean, know what I mean? It reminds me of all the letters those “educated” folks attach to their names. Many of them you have no idea about, but they mean something.
At the first opportunity I will have a chat with my “IT” man concerning my computer. It’s good to know someone that actually does know what they are talking about. I’ll ask him about external memory and the “cloud” that I pay a fee for every month, but have no clue how to access. I do need someone to offer some clarity about all of this. Someone to perhaps consolidate and organize my mess.
What’s the point in having a grandson if you can’t use his friends! I’ve always been a do it yourself kind of guy, but when it comes to computers I really should just leave that stuff alone. The do it yourselfers, the handyman, are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Me too, I guess. Knowing and doing are really quite different things. I know enough to leave it alone most of the time but there are times I will try to do it. Do you know what BIOS means? It’s pretty important.
