I heard that there were No Kings protests yesterday. I didn’t see any but where I live I didn’t expect I would either. Small town America, you bet it is. I didn’t leave my small town. I did see a few posts on Facebook showing massive crowds gathered, flooding the streets. Well I expect there is some truth to that, although I also suspect the turn out isn’t no where near as large as the media likes to proclaim. Still, this No Kings protest is an annual event now, I expect it will continue for another two years at the least.
It appears to me that a good number of these protests being staged today are attended more as a social event, than any cry for social change. The purpose of going is just to be a part of the crowd, to join in, it’s a form of entertainment. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that some are even receiving monetary compensation, or some promises from those in power. This No Kings protest is really just an I hate Trump rally. I wonder if a Republican or a member of any party beside the Democratic one, wins the next presidential election if this will continue.
My thinking is, it will not. An annual protest? Yeah, that’s how protesting works, on a schedule. I remember an annual event celebrating our break from the king, we call it the 4th of July. It was the day we declared our independence. It wasn’t for another seven years that it became official. We didn’t stage an annual protest, we fought a war. King George did not personally sign the treaty of Ghent, he just sent a representative, David Hartley to do so on his behalf.
I haven’t heard anything about the next protest. When is that scheduled and what are we protesting? Oh, that’s right, we are supposed to protest enforcing immigration and customs enforcement. It’s not an annual event, it’s whenever and wherever you see those federal agents. The gall of those people, doing their jobs, enforcing the law and detaining people just because they are in the country illegally! Our democratic representatives are refusing to fund that agency! It’s a “no law” protest! Wasn’t long ago there was a movement to defund the police, today it is just immigration and customs.
You know, there was a time when we fought a civil war to establish civil rights. Yes, the southern democrats didn’t want their ability to hold slaves infringed upon. Those slaves were the backbone of their economy, that cheap labor that got the hard work done. Others in this country just saw the injustice in the whole system and began protesting that. At first it was just a few protests in the north, staged by abolitionists and such. The protest spread to federal legislation which really upset those southern democrats. Eventually they declared secession! That was their form of protest. Led to that civil war, it’s estimated that as many as 750,000 Americans died in that war before it was over.
The main point of contention had been settled, slavery was abolished. Still protests from the south continued for another hundred years. The oppression of that “work force” continued unabated in the southern half of the nation. It was called Jim Crowe laws and was officially ended in 1964 by the civil rights act. No Democrats voted in favor of that legislation, not one, but the majority ruled and it was passed into law. Today the democratic plan is just to have no law whatsoever to interfere with their workforce. There are a few rumblings and mumblings about another secession. Won’t have a King either!
Someone hasn’t done their homework though, with this No Kings protest scheduling. The very first immigration policy established in the United States was the Naturalization act of 1790. It was signed into law on March 26,1790. Their No Kings protest was scheduled for the 28th of March, on a Saturday. Shouldn’t that annual event be on the actual date of the event they are protesting? Or, at the very least, it should fall in line with the Uniform Holiday Act of 1968, you know it make it more convenient.
When that act was passed it had overwhelming support in both the house and the senate. That was, of course, before we weren’t divided along party lines. There were no Republicans vs Democrats. No, at that time our representatives were actually representing the majority of the American people. They had fought a war to establish a nation and they intended to keep it that way. We had shed ourselves of the King and crown. Are we now to stage an annual protest in an attempt to repeal that legislation altogether? What about when Trumps time in office is over? Does the protest continue? A sort of National holiday established. Seeing how things are going I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if these liberal folks try just that. What are we celebrating Mommy? That we hate Donald Trump who was president a long time ago, a very bad man.
