While we are on the subject of aliens. No, I’m not talking about space aliens, the kind Obama says are real but he hasn’t personally seen any, not those aliens. I’m talking about the illegal aliens. My first question is, are there legal aliens? Well depends on who you are calling an alien I suppose. Identification has become the hot button topic these last few months especially. So who are aliens?

Legally speaking, in the United States aliens come in a multitude of varieties, there are indeed lawful aliens as well as unlawful (illegal) aliens. There are, at a minimum, eight categories. There are resident and non-resident aliens. The only people in the United States that aren’t aliens are those that have citizenship or are a national. Everyone else is aliens. It’s not always a bad thing to be called an alien. It is always a bad thing to be illegal, regardless of whether you are legal or illegal, that’s how our republic roles.

Now here in the United States of America we call ourselves Americans. Why is that? It’s because we are citizens of the United States of America. It isn’t because we live on the north American continent. There are actually twenty one other countries in north America. None of them call themselves Americans. Travel to any of those other nations without a passport, except those that are territories of the United States, and you are the illegal alien. During my time in the Navy I was often an alien, I have to say, I never really noticed anything different about that. Fortunately, I wasn’t illegal.

Consider the African continent. Is everyone from that geographic area an African? There are currently 54 nations on that continent. Strange how none of them call themselves Africans. They identify themselves with the nation of their birth, culture or region on that continent. It was only in America that the black folks started calling themselves African Americans. In Europe it isn’t quite as clear or simple as all that. Some call themselves Euro African but I’ve read where that isn’t very common.

We can’t talk about aliens without talking about the “migrants” and how they arrive in places. Migrants are just those folks that wander into a place without regard for borders or sovereignty. They know no borders. They just simply show up. We are told we should just welcome them with open arms because they are the exception to the rule. They aren’t asking for asylum, refuge or citizenship. They are just migrating, they might hang around for a while or they might just migrate somewhere else. We don’t know, all we should do is help and wait for them to decide what they want to do. Until then, just leave them alone. They are aliens sure enough, just migrating though. Was a time they were called explorers.

One thing that annoys me is this calling everyone that lived in the geographic area now known as the United States of America, Americans. The fact is prior to 1776 they were mostly British subjects. Colonists is the more common term. British colonists for the most part, but colonist did come from many other nations as well. When they arrived in the “colonies” they were subject to the laws of those colonies regardless of their origins. You can’t blame Americans for any wrongdoing prior to 1776. 1619 has been proposed as the beginning of the slave trade in America. Okay, British colonists were responsible for that. No citizen of the United States was involved, at least not until after 1776. 89 years later Americans abolished that practice altogether. We had a huge family fight about that. We get the credit for that! We didn’t start it, we ended it.

The thing is we are all earthlings. Doesn’t that mean we belong anywhere on the earth? Shouldn’t we just be able to migrate wherever and whenever we want? If that is the case why are we so concerned with aliens arriving from another place? Could be we are worried about their intentions. Could be we are worried about the transmission of disease we know nothing about. Could we we are worried they will just take our stuff. Yes it just could be we are leery of anyone different from ourselves. Maybe that is what we call, prejudice. Prejudice is just some preconceived idea not based in reason or experience. It’s simply something we think might be the case. But sometimes prejudice is the result of observation and experience. We call that exercising discretion. It comes down to one thing; are our fears warranted? Are aliens really dangerous? I mean we don’t know who they are!
