Setting aside all political affiliations, your personal feelings about whoever is in charge at any level of government, should government be giving out checks? Now I’ve gotten stimulus checks, I’m no different than anyone else, if you’re giving away money I’ll take it, every time it is offered. But, should the government be doing that? Is it truly a generous gesture, on your dime by the way, and is it an attempt to buy compliance and control? I can’t speak for others but have always been a bit leery of those offering gifts, something I was taught as a child. It wasn’t called stranger danger back in my day, but I was taught to be very cautious about accepting anything for free, it almost always has a price. Is that pessimism or just plain common sense? You decide.
The delegates in the house for the state of Maryland just overrode a veto from the governor concerning reparations. Now a commission will be formed to study the feasible of giving reparations to those whose ancestors had been enslaved in the state and those that suffered from inequitable policies in the past. The state is facing a 1.5 billion dollar deficit and they are studying a way to give money away, to a select group. My prediction is; it won’t happen. Just this morning I heard that Trump wants to give military members a “warrior bonus” of $1700.00. I haven’t heard all the details with that. I’m guessing that would be in addition to the “tariff” refund money. These are all proposals for a one time distribution of taxpayer funds. Meanwhile the taxpayers are in debt to the tune of 38 trillion dollars. Yes, we the taxpayers owe that money. But that isn’t real money is it.
We are also faced with the cost of charity. You can call all those social programs anything you like but the fact remains, they are are all charities. We tend to think of a charity as an organization that receives donations. A charity takes things in and redistributes that item without regard for making a profit on the transaction. Does that sound like a government function to you? It certainly doesn’t sound right to me. Government is a business, and a business should make a profit. Now that’s just common sense. If your business is 38 trillion dollars in debt you don’t hand out Christmas bonuses! If you are receiving goods and services without making any payment, that’s charity. Just because it is legislated it doesn’t change what it is, charity.
We are talking about taxpayer money, your check book, or atm card for the younger folks. We are issuing EBT cards drawn on your account! We are paying government employees to administer and redistribute your money. Billions of collars every year just given away with no return at all. In the red. Yet, that same government continues to offer you free money in various stimulus packages or grants. It’s just a one-time thing. It is, every time they do that. It that sound fiscal policy?
As I said, just set aside the whole political thing about who was giving what to whom. Instead think about the true purpose of those gifts. There is an expectation of return. Politicians have been kissing babies for a very long time. They will even kiss your *ss as long as you vote for them. Government has created your dependency, and now they offer relief expecting you to be grateful for that. You need money, lots of money, to live in America. The cost of government is high. But, don’t worry, it is also a very charitable government as long as you are willing to vote for them. That is the cost, it always costs something.
Federal taxes were first implemented during the civil war. It became obvious that the war wasn’t going to be as short an affair as they thought. Money was required to finance the army, to provide for essential services. Essential services! Today we pay taxes to support a myriad of programs and policies. We have so many programs and policies that the tax revenue collected can’t cover the bill. Yet government continues to just give money away. Billions of dollars every singe year. Almost 100 billion dollars a year to foreign nations! Your tax dollars given away. And then you feel great when the government gives you a couple grand. The government returning your own money! But you think it is government money and that’s great. Charity is a wonderful thing when it is someone’s else’s money. But as I said, I’ll take it every time it is offered, and I don’t suffer any moral ambiguity in doing so. It is my money after all. What political party is signing the check makes no difference to me.

Here’s a check. It’ll be drawn on your account.
