Every now and again I like to just sit and listen to some music. You tube has become a favorite. I can listen to all my old standards and favorites, as well as doing some exploring. I think it is great that I can sample all these artists past and present. Music is a wonderful highway taking you wherever you want to go, and sometimes where you don’t.
I spent a little time last evening visiting with Carole King. I was listening to her Tapestry album. Funny how, even after all these years, I remember the words to the songs. That album was released in 1971. It is the only album of hers that I am familiar with. My infatuation with her was short lived. A piano playing hippie chick was just the ticket back then.
When it comes to celebrities I have never been one to be star struck. At least not the fervent fan that some become. I admire their talents but just don’t elevate them to hero status. That being said there are some I would like to spend some time with. Carole King is one of those people. I think she would be a fascinating person to talk with. She has written so many songs that others have recorded and taken to the top of the charts. I would like to know how she feels about that. Which is the more satisfying ? Doing it yourself, or just writing the song ? A couple that she wrote I can relate too intimately. Isn’t that the goal of the songwriter ? Well for me she certainly succeeded. I am aware that she still writes and performs. I don’t listen to her ” new ” material. I have browsed it and it did not catch my interest. I think I just want Carole King to stay Carole King. The one in 1971. I wish Bob Dylan had stayed unplugged but that is another story.
Music truly does capture moments in time. It has the ability to transport you instantly, like magic. For a short time last evening I was back in my bedroom, a senior in high school and dreaming big dreams. Carole was singing her songs and I was looking for love. I hadn’t gone anywhere and no one I knew had left me, yet one song was stuck in my mind, So far away. Carole was singing ” so far away,doesn’t anybody stay in one place anymore,it would be so fine to see your face at my door ” a harbinger of things to come ? On some level it was and has been. Music as a time machine.
